Adam BRODBECK Sr. was born in 1721 in Muttenz, Basel, Switzerland. He was christened on 17 May 1722 in Muttenz, Basel, Switzerland. He died about Mar 1779 in Shenandoah Co, VA. In 1748 Adam Brodbeck, a weaver, requested and was granted permission to leave for America with his wife and two children. He arrived in Philadelphia on the ship "Crown" 30 Aug 1749 along with several other families from Muttenz, including his uncles, Adam and Nicolaus Brodbeck(Strassburger and Hinke vol 1 p 392). By 1760 Adam Brodbeck and his family were living in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He settled on a branch of Tumbling Run, a few miles west of present day Strasburg where he witnessed the will of his neighbor, John Funkhouser, in Feb 1760 along with John Niolaus Baker (Frederick Co Will Book 3 pp 255-6). This is the first record of Adam in Virginia. He obtained a survey warrant for 300 acres on Tumbling Run where he lived in Jun 1763 Peggy Joyner, Northern Neck Warrants and Surveys vol II Frederick Co p 19). He received a patent for this land from Lord Fairfax, 9 Aug 1766. Adam "Brewback" was naturalized as a citizen of Virginia in the Frederick Co Court, 1 Nov 1768 (Frederick Co Order Book 14 p 348). The death date for Adam's wife Elizabeth is unknown but in October, 1773 he married Ursula Rohrer, widow of Jacob Rohrer, another settler on Tumbling Run. At the time of the marriage they drew up a contract in which she forfeited all dower interests in his property. Jacob Rohrer and his family were associated with the Sabbatarian group on Sandy Hook that had connections with the Cloisters at Ephrata, PA. There is no evidence that the Brubecks hjad any further ties to the Sabbatarians. Adam wrote a will 2 Dec 1778 and died soon afterwards. The will was probated 25 Mar 1779, with his son-in-law, Abraham Funkhouser as executor (Schenandoah Co Will book A p 205). A final settlement of the estate was made by Funkhouser in 1782, by which time the youngest child had come of age. Ursula Brubeck was living at the time of the settlement. Parents: Hans Jacob BRODBECK and Anna SCHAFFNER.He was married to Elizabeth ZENDER on 9 Oct 1773 in Shenandoah Co, VA. Children were: Anna BRODBECK, Sibilla BRODBECK, Anna Maria BRODBECK, Elizabeth Rosina BRODBECK , Barberry BRODBECK, Adam BRODBECK, John BRODBECK, Philip BRODBECK, Johann Jacob BRUBECK.
