Hi:I also have Rohleder ancestors from Mishawaka. My great-great grandfather was Frederick A. Rohleder, born in Germany in 1846.I am thinking his name was Frederick August Rohleder, so perhaps he is the same August Rohleder you refer to.He was married to Sarah Weiss in 1873.
I have a copy of the book "History of St. Joseph County 1880" by C. C. Chapman which has this entry:
"Frederick A. Rohleder was born in Germany Jan.6, 1846; was reared and educated in the village of Vollmershain, Germany. He came to this place (Mishawaka) in 1860, where he followed carpentering for 13 years. In 1873 he erected a brick block in Mishawaka, and kept a bakery and grocery with Mr. Kuss for 6 years. In 1869 he engaged in the dry-goods trade here, and is doing a good business, with a capital stock of $5500.He married Miss Sarah Wees (sic) in 1873; they have 3 children, Emma, Walter, and Emma." (incorrect third name; they eventually had 6 children, Emma being my great-grandmother).
There is also an entry for a John Klein, Jr. Could this be family to your John Lewis Klein?:
"This enterprising young dealer in and manufacturer of boots and shoes was born in Mishawaka June 2, 1850, and is a son of John and Mary Klein, also of Mishawaka. He is of German descent; he early learned the shoemaker's trade, which he now follows, and also carries a fine stock of ready-made boots and shoes, and gents' furnishing goods. He is doing a good business, which is on the increase."
The Rohleders were also charter members in 1860 of St. Andrews German Evangelical Church in Mishawaka, now St. Andrews United Church of Christ. There is an August Rohleder and Henry Rohleder on the list of charter members.
Frederick A. could have signed that early church constitution as he would have been about 14 years old; children are confirmed in this denomination at 14 with all membership rights.
I remember a Theresa Rohleder somewhere in my genealogy research, but I don't know anything about her.Frederick and Sarah had 6 children:Walter, Emma, Eugene, Florence, Minnie and Ella. You mention that August was living in Michigan at the time of Theresa's death; my Frederick died in the late 1880's, I think! He and Sarah are both buried in City Cemetery, Mishawaka.I have the dates but they are buried in my papers somewhere in the closet!
Hope some of this helps you out!
Pat
