Richard Rogerson Jr. 9/03/03
Need to make a correction to the previous post: The store at 412-419, Broad Street, Edenton N.C. Was constructed for John L Rogerson who bought this lot in 1886, in partnership with Oliver H. Darden, the proprietor of a Grocery company.
Rogerson aquired total interest in the Building in 1893.
John L. Rogerson was a prominent business man of Edenton andalso was Co- founder of Beaver Hill Cemetery, a white cemetery. John L. Rogerson is buried in Beaver Hill Cemetery.
The Rogerson Building remained rental property of the Rogerson famuly until 1951.
Ms. Josephine Napolean Leary, born into slavery in Williamston N.C. In 1856. (died 1922) A prominent black business woman of Edenton N.C. In 1894 Ms. Leary had the building at 421-423-425, constructed as rental property and operated a barber shop in one part of the building many years. Ms. Leary also owned several other rental propertys. Ms.Leary sold the three stores in 1922, this building since 1940, has housed the printing plant of the Chowan Herald Newspaper, the local weekly newspaper. Inc. 1922.
This block of formerly flimsey wooden buildings, known as the "cheap side" burned to the ground in 1884, burning the wooden buildings formerly occupied by Ms. Learys barber shop and the building next door operated as a saloon by John L. Rogerson. Both of the new buildings of Ms. Leary and Mr. Rogerson, have custom store fronts made by the Muscer Co. of Missouri. The Store fronts are nearly identical in appearance.
