During my years of Research of the Rogersons of Eastern N.C. I have found two different groups of African American Rogersons. The oldest mention is of one Alexander Rogerson, born in Perquimans County in the 1840s. Alexander was born free which, due to the laws of the time period indicate his mother was a white Rogerson. The cencus list him as Mulatto, can read and write,Farmer, owns a large tract of land and has about 18 or so children. Alexander leaves a will and his estate is divided among his children. This Group of African American Rogersons likely have living Descendants living in Chowan and Perquimans Counties.I do know there are African American Rogersons living in Edenton N.C.
The second larger group of African American Rogersons originate in Martin County N.C. in the year 1864. Billy Rogerson married a very rich widow named Nancy Mobley. She owned over 100 slaves and over a thousand acres of land. In 1864 she gave her slaves a large tract of land they lived on. They all took the Rogerson name but some shortened the name to Rogers.Today it is known as Rogers Township. For many years this group of Rogers/Rogersons have a large family reunion each year. Any one from Williamston N.C. can tell you when it is held each year. Several African American Rogersons of this group became very wealthy. One John Rogerson moved to Edenton N.C. where in `1899, he built a 3 story Brick and stone building and opened a Cigar and Liquor store beside his Aunt and Uncles 3 story building. The Leary and Rogerson buildings are still in use today on Main St.In Edenton. I do not have much info on African American Rogersons but would like to find more. I hope this helps as this is all I could find during my research, It may provide you with a place to start. Let me know if this helps.
