I have come to the same dead end as you. I do have information going forward from there. William Isaac was my Great Great Grandfather and he ended up in Obion County. I think I found him working on a farm at age 13 in the 1880 census. He then married Nancy Guy in 1890 and moved to Troy. He was a blacksmith, like his father.
I can tell you that my Grandfather's name was Robert Marshall (although all census records have him as Bob), so there is a good chance that is what R. M. stands for.
I have put in a request for marriage records in Obion County to see if this is where R. M. and Sarah were from. It wouldn't suprise me. There is a family story that my Great Great Grandfather was blamed for a work-related death, and left for Illinois to avoid prosecution. If there is any truth to this, then it wouldn't supprose me that he or his son would have resettled in Obion later on. I am fairly certain they were in Tennessee in 1851, because the 1860 census has their first two children listed as being born in TN.
I will follow up if I find anything.
