Stanly,
May I say that I have enjoyed your work on the ROGERS families and it is one of the many files of ROGERS that I refer to.Wish I had answers for you as to the place of origin for James Rogers who md. Mary and is first of your line.
Nothing I have in my FTM files shows that our ANSON CO. NC ROGERS are related to your ROGERS lines in DUPLIN/ BERTIE/ or SAMPSON CO's NC, but . . . we don't seem to be connected to the other ANSON/ STANLY CO. NC ROGERS lines out of JOB ROGERS of Wake Co. NC down to Anson Co. NC.
Stanly Co. NC library files mentioned that our JAMES ROGERS, Sr. may either be a brother or son of a JOHN ROGERS/ RODGERS the ULSTER SCOT who came down the old wagon road out of Philadelphia, PA in 1732 and settled on Back Creek at junction of Rocky River in what is today CABARRUS CO. NC but in 1732 was wilderness under jurisdiction of NEW HANOVER CO. NC.That land later was split and Bladen Co. NC was eventually formed, and by 1750 ANSON CO. NC was formed from BLADEN CO. NC.
My direct line of ROGERS is JAMES ROGERS, Sr.of ANSON CO. NC.We have James Rogers, Sr. b. bet. 1700-1720 in Unknown place with one of the only verifications of his being a 1774 ANSON CO. NC Petition he signed with his son JAMES ROGERS, Jr. b. abt. 1746 NC and a JOHN ROGERS.This petition was for land occupants to build a county road across their property in 1774 Anson Co. NC.By 1779, we have no further records of JAMES ROGERS, Sr. and assumed he had died after 1779.We know that land entries in name of JAMES ROGERS ( Jr. we believe)are for land along Long Creek in Montgomery Co. NC in 1779 which is land that was taken to form Montgomery when it was created in 1779 from upper end of Anson Co. NC.James Rogers Jr. is found on various petitions, census data etc. in Montgomery Co. NC in that same time period.Hissons are also living nearby to him as well along Long Creek in Montgomery Co. NC per their data later on.
Our Rogers lived along Long Creek in MONTGOMERY/ Anson Co. NC for sometime and some are still in that region. My GGG Grandfather WILLIAM L. ROGERS b. 1770 Montgomery Co. NC ( which was then Anson in 1770 ) moved with his large family of Rogers and others of that county into Carroll Co. TN by 1823.My branch of Carroll Co. TN ROGERS lines then migrated into Boone Co. AR and tell a story of being the MAYFLOWER ROGERS and yes, I had a good laugh over that one too.But the story persists that our ROGERS are of SCOTS-IRISH heritage with WELSH, and DUTCH which would indicate those ethnic groups of that CABARRUS CO. NC region into Anson/ Montgomery Co. NC areas. All those ethnic groups were in Cabarrus by about 1780 or before. We also have history that our Rogers may have some Cherokee ethnic heritages and indeed some of my own line of Boone Co. AR ROGERS did inherit Indian Artifacts that they say were passed down to them as family memorabilia.
We know living in ANSON CO. NC are families by surname of STEPHENS/ STEVENS at same time as my James Rogers, Sr. was living there as well. Some researchers of the STEPHENS/ STEVENS of nearby DUPLIN CO. NC regionshave stated to me , ( who have done more research on the Duplin Co. NC ROGERS lines,)that they believe their STEPHENS/ STEVENS had intermarried with the lines of PELEG ROGERS and ISABELL BRAND.When I mentioned the STEPHENS/ STEVENS of ANSON CO. NC I believe I was told that they were distant or near cousins to those in the DUPLIN CO. NC region who had intermarried with the DUPLIN CO. NC ROGERS lines.
It appears that one JAMES ROGERS was in SAMPSON CO. NC at same time as my JAMES ROGERS, Sr.was living in ANSON CO. NC ( abt. 1774- 1779 )and the STEPHENS / STEVENS researcher had posted the Sampson Co. NC deed, as I recall, which to me seemed to be in same time period that our JAMES ROGERS Sr. and son Jr. were living in ANSON CO. NC.As we have no further records to verify our JAMES ROGERS, Sr. by, then we cannot find further ROGERS lines that we might be related to.
Our first or given names of our ROGERS that seemed to pass on from one generation to another were ( some were so common given names that we discount those ) :
WILLIAM;JAMES;BASIL;CELIA;DRUCILLA;MARY FRANCIS;ARAMINTA;ISABELLA;MARTHA;PURITY;JOHN;FREDERICK; JOSHUAH;NANCY and less common and earlier names were EZEKIEL ;ANNA; LUCINDA etc.
If you find any further information on JAMES ROGERS of Duplin Co. NC who is the son of PELEG ROGERS and ISABELLA BRAND, I would certainly love to have that to verify fully that there is no possibility that our JAMES ROGERS, Sr. of ANSON CO. NC in 1774-1779would be same person.Until then, that question is still in my mind, though we aren't sure of the exact birth year for JAMES ROGERS of DUPLIN CO. NC but know he died abt. 1795 Duplin Co. NC, I believe. I have found very little on him, but have not been to Duplin Co. NC to research either him or the JAMES ROGERS of SAMPSON CO. NC who was indicated to me to possibly be same JAMES ROGERS who d. abt. 1795 DUPLIN CO. NC.
Thanks,
Tina Rogers Beller
