The first doesn't look very much like a Cherokee, since they were both born in Ireland, but the wife's name is Bridget so I thought I'd include them.
In general, you need dates and spouses to help identify people, especially with common surnames. The US Census Bureau,
http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/namesearch.plhttp://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/namesearch.pl
tells us that ROGERS is the 54th most common surname in the US. (SMITH is #1, PACK is 1,627th or so.)
Birth certificates, marriage license applications, obituaries, SSN Applications, cemetery records and death certificates will all help you get back to the 1800's. Most of the genealogy on the Internet is about people who lived in the 1800's or earlier.
Counties help too, even though RI doesn't have many. (Texas, by contract, had over 100.)
http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgihttp://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi
has 294 people with surname ROGERS whose last residence was RI. Some of them may be related to you. Some probably are not. I threw that in to show you why you should be more specific, if you can.
http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgihttp://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi
has 1,617 people with surname ROGERS who were born in RI.

has some tips and links for people just starting out.
Best of luck!
