Hugh,
Thank you so much for posting this information! That is very interesting to me, because my John L. Sansom married Sarah Ann Carter (daughter of Isaac and Mary Carter, from Warren Co, GA) around 1827. Isaac Carter moved to Conecuh Co, AL around 1815, so I imagine John and Sarah married in Conecuh County.I never could figure out how John L. Sansom ended up in Conecuh County to marry Sarah.
I think John's mother may have been Lettice Rogers, and that would explain how he ended up in Conecuh County in the 1820's. In 1830, he and Sarah were in the Wilcox County, AL census (p. 190 on same page of Whitman Hill, who married a Griffin...her sister married Michael Rogers). We can't seem to find any Wilcox Co. deeds with his name on them, though.
John L. Sansom was an administrator of Wiley Rogers' estate in Clarke Co, MS in 1853...there a so many ties to this Rogers family. Family legend is that John's mother's name was "Leticia" Lamar. My theory is that her first husband (Sansom) died and she remarried Burwell. I need to check Putnam Co (and surrounding counties) for records.
Unfortunately, the courthouse in Conecuh County burned, destroying all records from that time period. However, there are still some old Baptist church records available. My Isaac Carter was a delegate from Mars Hill Baptist Church (they lived in western Conecuh Co, right on the Monroe Co. border), that was going to merge with another Baptist Church in the vicinity (but never did). I have contacted Samford University in Birmingham to obtain records for Mars Hill Church pertaining to the Carter and Sansom families. I will also request information for any Rogers at that church.
I live in Alabama and am going to visit the Conecuh library soon, as the librarian told me they have some old church records there, also. Will let you know what I find out.
About Burwell being in Butler County...I think it is possible that he lived there prior to moving to Wilcox...or the county lines may have changed. The Butler courthouse burned around 1853, I think...so records will not be available. Also, a Michael Rogers purchased federal land in Dallas County, AL in 1833, so there may be some records in Dallas County.
Thanks again!
Nancy
