I am going to take another try at this. Hes had me stuck for years!
Family lore says Joseph was born in Elizabeth, NJ. Naturally I cant find anything about that.
By the war of 1812, he had moved on to Virginia, wher he served, according to info in hand, as Pvt., Virginia Militia, Cpt. Wm Irwin Co. Col Archibald Woods Command.
After the war he moved to the Tridelphia area of Ohio County in what is now WV. He married a Kate Liptka from Pennsylvania (Washington Co?) and they had 11 children, moving to Cambridge, Guernsey Co, OH along the way

As the years passed, the family splintered. Kate and Joseph split, and she went to missouri with son charles, who later moved to the red river region of texas. Henry worked his way west to kansas. Joseph Sr. died in Cambridge, and his daughters and their families moved west into sw missouri and eastern oklahoma. Freeman moved to Augusta GA and married the daughter of a Haitian planter, later moving to south GA and then to texas. My main concern, Joseph Jr., disappeared into thin air from 1820 or so until 1876, when he pops up on his brothers ranch to marry ms. duval (twice widowed with kids).
This brood served on both sides in "the Late Unpleasantness", with Henry in the Union Army and Charles and his sons in the texas cavalry and the GA branch in a variety of positions. Two sons of Charles are on the US Marshals Service Roll of Honor, killed while working with a US marshal in Indian Territory attempting to collect a gang of murderous rustlers. Another son of Charles helped found the town of Roff, OK.
Now.. given new jersey, Joseph Sr must have been someone's little boy but i have not been able to find him there. The Tompkins name is also found in that area, and stayed in the family for 3-4 generations. I note that when Freeman moved to Augusta, also in the town was a NY/NJ Moses Roff engaged in the shipping industry. I wonder if there is a clue there, why an Ohio millwright would move to augusta leaving his family to start over.
Can ANYONE .. any of you NJ sleuths, give me a clue to a hint of a trail on my line?
