Thank you for your reply
I have the following information from my husbands line
Ludolph and louisa's Son Edward Ludolph moved to Cardiff and in 1881 was lodging with William Thomas and family in Wyndham Crescent Canton Cardiff. Later married their daughter Lucy Jane in 1883.
Her daughter also Lucy Jane married Walter Winsborough in 1916 and they had a son and daughter, the daughter is my Mum in law.Still living in Cardiff
The 1901 census also shows William and wife Emily living in a newsagents shop in Roath Cardiff .
also shows a John and Emmie Ropke living in Gloucestershire born in Langendam so wondered if that could be where the family came from

Have the 1861 census for Ludolph and Louis showing them at Waterloo buildings with Emily age 7, william,5,Louisa M,3, George 2 and Edward 11months.
Later census also reveals a son Henry and Son Fred, interestingly by 1881 they seem to of disappeared in the main. Do you know if they went back to Germany?
I would really love to find out the next step backwards, also Ludolphs ship (as a master mariner) but unfortunately live in S Wales with two young children so have not found the time to visit record offices yet!!!
Anything you can tell me I would love to hear
Many thanks
Rose
