Rachel, please give us what information you have:your father's name and when possible grandfather's name also. Where did they (you) live?
The reason I decided to reply was the french connection. My great grandfather was Otto (Ottomar) Roemer. His older brother was Albert W. Roemer and Albert married a woman who was born in France and whose Parents where also from France with the name of Elizabeth(This information is from the 1900 census).
Albert was born in Germany. He came to the states in 1854 (he was 11) and the family lived in New York for about 13 years before they moved to Detroit.
This may not help you. But if you provide more information you should get more responses.
