Deborah, the Irish hunt is so much more difficult than the UK. All my other rellies have been virtually all British though on one side came from France to England as Hugenots. There is more back to the crusades which I plan to get into eventually. However, I do have the Roe family tree which was left to us by a Roe ancestor and I have been trying to document it for over a year with little success.
The difficult part is knowing exactly where to search because of the loss of Census information. I find that there are so many possibilities: Parishes are not just Church orientated but there are also Civil parishes. There are townlands, poor law unions, baronies.....all within counties. If you know what part of Ireland your James came from you can get onto the lists and post what you know and hope one of the listers has a link. There is Rootsweb lists for most of the Counties and there is a Roe list on Yahoo. Sometimes a missing peice to the puzzel is through others searching.
I have found some pieces through the Mormon's Family Search by searching under the spouses names....ie just put in the last name and country....Ireland. This has been more successful for me than filling in all the details. Sometimes it means you have to search every James Roe marriage to see if the spouse is listed. If the IGI comes from a Parish Record then you could go to the FHC and actually look at the film listed ont he IGI which should give you parents names or at least the father and sometimes place of birth.
Good Luck
