I'd sent this to Dr. Thomas Roderick a couple of weeks ago, but perhaps there someone else who might be able to answer:
Sir, I'm interested in joining your Family Tree DNA project, and would like a little more information. First, allow me to add a little background.
My last name is "Phelps", as is my father's. He was told by his mother that the man she married shortly before birth, and who lends his name to us, was not actually his father - she was already pregnant when she married. Unfortunately she died young, and my father didn't have any interest in the matter when she told him this. When I became interested in genealogy a couple of her sisters were still living, and they told me that my father's biological father was Roe Roadruck. We have since found pictures from that time period which would seem to corroborate this.
I've traced Roe's ancestors back to 1801, and they are in David Roderick's book about the descendants of the German Johannes Rothrock. While the earliest part of my branch seems to follow known locations and migration patterns for his well-documented family, it isn't known exactly how mine fit in - he refers to us currently as a "stand-alone" branch. (I've ordered his book, which hopefully will be arriving in a week or so.)
Finally, my questions - are there many of the German Rothrock/Rodrick/Roadruck/etc. currently participating in the Y-DNA part of your project? I'd like to participate, but given the rather informal (and unproven) method of my descent from this family, I'm not sure my results would be beneficial. Are there descendants of Johannes Rothrock participating in the project? If so, would this test lend evidence of me being a direct male-line descendant of him (i.e. indicating that I have the same paternal ancestor roughly "x" centuries ago as another participant?) I realize that there will be no DNA marker saying "Johannes Rothrock" (though wouldn't that be great!) but am wondering if the results could tell me whether or not I'm likely descended from the same group.
Thanks for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.
