Obit of Maria A. Rockwell, daughter of Joesph Rockwell (son of Isaac Rockwell and Phebe Hempstead) and Betsy?

Mrs. Maria A. Ridout. Woman of Estimable Qualites Passes Away at Ripe Age. (Contributed)

The subject of this sketch, Maria A. Rockwell, was born in the town of Hanover, June 1, 1836, and died at the home of her son, Wesley Ridout, at Griswold, N. Y. Jan 2nd 1915, aged 78 years, seven months and one day.
       She was a daughter of Joseph and Betsy Rockwell, being one of five children, including four brothers, Amos, Menzo, Enoch and Richard, two of whom survive.       
She was united in marriage June 1, 1858, to Heber G. Howe of Arkwright, who died Jan 24, 1871. Of this union four children were born ; Mrs. Louis Williams of Fredonia, Mrs Thomas Hilton of Cassadaga, Frank Howe of Forestville and Mrs Rose Steckney of Fredonia.
Nov. 20, 1871, she married Nathan Ridout of Leon, N. Y., who died March 4, 1888. Four children were born of this marriage ; Mrs. L. J. Ackler of Leon, Mrs. Elmer Chapman of Gowanda, Mrs. Herbert Lawrence of Fredonia and Wesley Ridout of Cassadaga, all of whom survive, besides 22 grand children and eight great-grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her loss.
In 1878 she united with the M E church at Leon and continued a devoted and faithful member.
To know her was to love her, and all that knew her can only say she was of a quiet and amiable disposition and a true and loving mother.
       Always ready and willing to help others, with never a thought of self, although at times her crosse seemed unbearable, yet she bore it with a Christian fortitude and the world was the better for her having lived in it.
       The funeral was held from the M.E. church of Leon, conducted by Rev. Esther Limberg.
       The bearers were Louis Williams, Elmer Chapman, Lemuel ( ?) Ackler, Thomas Hilton, Bert Smith and Earl Hilton.
       Music was furnished by the Leon choir, consisting of Mrs. Anna Clark and Mrs. Hazel Young, assested by Rev. Esther Limberg, who sang, by special request, « Meet Mother in the Skies.
