Just found in the Mercer (Mercer Co., MO) Centennial 1872-1971 book:The family of John G. and Eleanor Rockhold Early moved to Mercer Co. in 1851, traveling 6 wks. with ox teams.(Includes a picture of their son Thomas C. Early). Also states: The Early Cemetery was started in 1858, and the first acre of ground was donated by John G. Early. This took place at the time of the death of John Early's daughter, Melvina Jane Early Sears, wife of Cpt. Wm. Sears, and their infant daughter, both dying of smallpox on Jan. 16, 1858 and were buried in one grave. This was the first burial in the cemetery.John G. Early died of the same epidemic on Jan. 28, 1858.
