William Rochelle & his brother Henderson B. Rochelle's farms were located in Western Lawrence County, within a mile of Lodi, and almost on the Wayne County border. The Rochelle Cemetery and the adjacent church are located either on or adjacent to William's former farm, which was later farmed by his son Rufus. After the Civil War, Henderson and his family left Lawrence County. His son Marcellus settled in Lewis County, and daughter Sarah Frances Walker settled just across the border of Lewis in Wayne County, and the rest of our side of the family moved on up into Hickman County.
It makes sense for Robert Holt to be buried in the Swiss Cemetery in Hohenwald, where some of Marcellus's line are buried. If Robert's wife died earlier, she could well be buried in the Rochelle Cemetery.A lot depends on when she died, and when he wound up in Hohenwald. When WGW Rochelle died, he was no longer in Swan Creek, Hickman County. He and his wife sold their farm out to a phosphate company about 1905 and moved over to Beaverdam Creek with a son. After his wife died, WGW moved down to near Ashland in Wayne County to live with his daughter Sarah Frances Walker.Since this was the time before nursing homes, it seems a likely scenario to have been played out in the Holts as well.IF Obedience Elizabeth died in Lawrence County, she's surely buried with her siblings (and probably parents) in the Rochelle Cemetery.But...why did Robert wind up in Lewis County? That's the key question, along with the timing of Obedience's death.Did Robert move to Lewis County WITH his wife to farm or engage in business, or did he move up there a widower (and thus probably to live with a child of his in his old age).
We struggle with the hinted-at, but unwritten stories in our lineage as well...things suggested by the data, but difficult to pin down. Thanks for the heads-up on the Holts.Dad and I photodocumented the Rochelle stones at the Rochelle Cemetery in 2003.Lots of unmarked graves, and patterns within the family structure suggest that William Rochelle & Obedience Keath, as well as Rufus Rochelle & Mary Catherine Osborne are buried there, and it is also possible that William and Henderson's mother, Mary Ray and Henderson's first wife, Frances Robertson, may be under those field rocks.
