Ellen Roche, New York (b. 1840's Northern Ireland)
I am looking for information regarding my Roche-Crooks ancestors. My great-grandmother was born Emma WALDRON Crooks (later Baillet) to John and Ellen (nee Roche) Crooks on May 11, 1870 in New York City. John was born in England around 1840 and Ellen was born in Northern Ireland (according to her children in the 1930 US census) some time in the 1840's. I believe that John and Ellen were married in England. John and Ellen had five other children: Mary Ann (Mary), later Campbell, born abt. 1862 in either England or Maryland; John William (Bill) born in 1866 in either Maryland or New York; Ellen, born within a year of Bill, in New York; Elizabeth (Lizzie), latter Brogan, born in New York around 1873; and Jenie, born about 1875 in New Jersey.
Ellen Roche Crooks died some time between 1875 and 1880 as she does not appear with the family in the 1880 census and John is listed as a widower.
There is no obvious reason that I know of for the inclusion of Waldron in Emma's name, but I thought it was possible that it could be the name of one of her grandmothers (married name either Crooks or Roche).
If anyone have any information regarding this family, in particular, a Waldron-Roche marriage in Northern Ireland or a Waldron-Crooks marriage in England in the first half of the 19th century I would like to hear from you.
Thank you,
Nancy Dunne
