Hi Wanda, Michael, Donald and Ben: Like all of you, one of the places where I got stuck was Lucinda Robey Gates. She was mine and Michael's great great grandmother. (Michael and I have communicated.) My father was Norval F. Norris 1912 - 1999. his mother was Clara Augusta Gates who married William Franklin Norris , her parents were William Theodore Gates and Alice Rebecca Dyer, and William Theodore's mother was Lucinda M F Robey who married William H Gates. That's about where the information I have ends, when it comes to Lucinda M F Robey. However, I do have some clues LOL
My Great Aunt was Catherine Marie "Katie" Gates Clem. She died in 1980. I was teaching school, and I can't remember what mom was doing, but Dad went back to Leonardtown, St. Mary's County, Southern Maryland by himself to Aunt Katie's funeral where she'd been in a nursing home for a little over a year. After Aunt Katie's burial at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D. C., he came home and brought Lucinda's family Bible with him. It went up on the shelf with my great grandparents Gates' family Bible. Back in 2008, after I had a bout with breast cancer in 2005, a series of mini-strokes that totally wiped out my short term memory in 2006, and had to have a triple bypass in 2008, so that's when this most recent search started.
You'll find copies of these documents all on my ancestry.com account, Norris-Gates-Fritts/Fritz-Gentry site. I think Michael already has these, but you know that since mine is a public tree, you're welcome to get them. Anyway, I gave up on Lucinda Robey Gates some time ago, I found the obituaries for Lemuel Robey in her Bible, and thought this must be her father. WRONG! It was her son, James Lemuel Robey, who had been a police officer in Washington, D. C. and possibly at the White House. However, he had some emotional problems, and ended up his life in an asylum in D.C.
Lemuel was married to Margaret Jane Wilant, and this information was located on the Burrowes and Safranek tree of czlion57 (ancestry.com). So, there is where I got most of my information on her, from czlion57. Anyway, they were married in DC, and moved to Grand Rapids, Iowa. They stayed together for quite some time, and had 5 children (I think), as you will see when you look the information up on ancestry.com. (lots of pictures, too) Anyway, Lemuel didn't like Grand Rapids and moved back to Washington, D. C. It was after he moved back that he lost his mind and had to be hospitalized for the rest of his life. When he passed away, Margaret Jane Wilant Gates remarried, and you'll see the pictures of Mr. Bruner, her 2nd husband, on there, too.
For a while I thought Lemuel had to have been Lucinda's father, but after I started working on it again this past week, I realized he couldn't have been. So, now, like you, I'm back to square one of who her parents were.
Oh and one other note, apparently, Lemuel was highly decorated as a policeman. So there has to be records of him somewhere.
Thus far, cousins, that's what I've got! Please keep in touch and I'll try to keep in touch with you if I find any more information. Take Care!
