My mother's maiden name was Roberts, and we have traced her line back to Aaron Roberts of Tennessee (Claiborne County, we think). His wife's first name was Rachel; last name unknown. We do not have a birth date for Aaron, but his son Thomas (my g-g-grandfather) was born in 1827 in Clay County, MO.
A cousin recently suggested that the name was originally McRoberts and was change to Roberts to escape anti-Irish prejudice. Does anyone have any information that might support or refute this theory or that might connect to this line of my family?
