Panter/Painter DNA match, Robbins, Rutherford, NC
Hi,
I am a descendant of Nancy Panter/Painter, born around 179?, in North Carolina. She is on the 1820 census of Rutherford County, NC.My father is William Panter, a descendant of William M. Panter, one of Nancy's sons, born in 1826, Rutherford County, NC.
Nancy has long been a mystery to all of her descendants. As there is no husband for Nancy listed on the census reports, we have debated her status.Either she was married to a Native American, who was not counted on the census reports, or she was married to a trapper, who was never home, or she had five illegitimate children with no bastardy bonds to be found for those five.
I decided I must have my dad's DNA analysed. He is an exact match to Larry Robbins (Tamara?).
The funny thing is, when I began searching this site, I found many of the people I had discovered that MUST be related to my Nancy. They are as follows:
(1) Sally Painter, born 1780-1790, married Asa Martin in 1806 in Rutherford County. On the 1830 census, Asa and Sally are on page 520 and Nancy is on page 519.(2) Piny Panter, born 1784-1794, married Drury King in 1809 in Rutherford County. On the 1820 census, Drury and Piny are listed directly below Nancy on page 370.There is a bastardy bond on a Nancy Painter, 3 December 1807, with Bondsmen Thomas King, William Gibson and Mose Franklin.First named usually father.Don't know if this is our Nancy, but this is not one of the children listed on the census. Our Nancy would have been 12 at the time, IF she were born in 1795.(3) Mary Panter, born 1794-1804, married John Williams in 1819 in Rutherford County. On the 1820 census, John and Mary are on page 352, and Nancy is on page 370.(4)Ester (Easter) Painter, born 100-1810, married Middlton Sutton in 1821 in Rutherford County. On the 1830 census, Middlton and Ester are on page 463, and Nancy is on page 510.(5) William Painter married Sarah Robbins in 1821 in Rutherford County, bondsman, Middlton Sutton.Nancy's youngest son married Martha Sutton.
There is also a Samuel Panter who married Elizabeth Swan on July 21, 1812.His bondsman is Miles Aster and his witness is Drury Dobbins (Robbins?).
I believe this to be a family of brothers and sisters.I do not know who the parents are.I do not believe that they belong to Jacob and John Painter (can't fit them all in) and I am positive they do not belong to the Bender/Painters.
Now, the DNA is done, and my dad's dad must have been a Robbins. The DNA is of European origin. If there is Native American blood, it would have been through the mother. Was Nancy's mate half Native American and she kept her name, and he was not counted on a census?Or was she not married at all?I have answers, but I still have questions.
