Robbins Cemetery, Al.
Robbins Family Cemetery
This cemetery was located south of Walnut Grove. There isn’t any evidence today
because the Murphree Valley Road was widened to cover it. To locate the area,
travel west on U.S. Highway # 278 to Walnut Grove, Alabama and turn Left on Murphree
Valley Road . Travel 1.4 miles and on the Right there are 4 or more large Cedar trees.
The two known graves were about at the west edge of the pavement near a driveway.
William Moore Robbins had Married L.E.Ray Stewart of Van Buren, Alabama. She could’ve
died in childbirth, as she and a child were known to be buried there. A descendant says
there was a nice tombstone about 4 feet high and the area was surrounded by a picket
fence. The descendants remembers the date of 1856, but says that she is not positive of
that being the correct death date of Mrs. Robbins and the child. This date could be correct
because Mr. Robbins was Born 1/24/1834, and he married again to Mary L. Wood
(we assume this to be her maiden name),and they are buried in the Altoona &
Walnut Grove Cemetery. Etowah County,Walnut Grove, Alabams Sometime after 1952, the state wrote the Robbins family in Flordia about moving the
grave. Correspondence asked the state to contact Charlie Robbins, a son of the above
William Robbins, but no contact was made before the marker was moved to the side of
the road. It was aparently stolen. The State failed to exercise common decency or respect
in not moving the marker to a known cemetery.
Got this from Cemetery in Etowah County, Alabama. This is sad..
