Hi Bill,
Because my husband's grandmother spelled her surname "Roberts" it took us a long time with the census records to finally figure out that most of the family before her actually spelled the name "Robards."
Once we found that, we located her father Nathadus in Hopkins Co., KY.His wife's name was Lucy (?).Nathadus' father and grandfather were both named Allen Robards. His father married Elizabeth Ellisand his grandfather was married to a woman named Ann.Census records state that Allen, Sr. and Ann were both born in Virginia.
Allen Sr. was a farmer and Allen Jr. a blacksmith, according to the census records.Now......I have not any verification that they actually belong together.Allen Sr.'s household is listed in the Epping Forest District; whereas Allen Jr.'s is in the Ledge of Rock District.I am hoping to get to a library soon to check out the 1830 and 1840 censuses for Granville Co.Also the 1790 and early 1800's census' for every county in the state of Virginia if I have to.
Also, I found a marriage license for Allen Jr. and Elizabeth Ellis in the records for Orange Co., NC on April 7, 1848.
If you can add to my information, I would appreciate it.And when I get to the library, I will send you a report on what I found, if anything.
