George Campbell, m. Elizabeth Roark ~1868 in Tenn

Summary:

Is the George Campbell I found the one who married Elizabeth Roark in 1868 in Hamilton County, Tennessee?

Details:

I am new to Roark genealogy and not related. The lady I'm helping has a copy of "Joseph Roark, His Life and Times", by John J. Roark. I gather it is the work by which all other Roark genealogy is judged. I can see why; it is an impressive work.

It has, starting on p. 405, a list of the children of John Roark (1800 - 1870 and Margaret Gross (1806 - 1860). They both died just before the census in their respective years, worse the luck.

"Life and Times" says "Elizabeth Roark, born ca. 1828, married George Campbell, Nothing further is known." The end note (90) cites Mrs. Laura Roark Shropshire, "Pioneer Days", 1992 edition, p. 54. It also says "no George Campbell can be identified in the census for 1860 or for subsequent years."

I found a George Campbell who fits, but "fits" and "is undoubtedly the man" are two different things. This George brings up hopes and fears. I hope I have made a small contribution to Roark genealogy. I fear I have jumped to a conclusion based on desire rather than facts.

Elizabeth is with her father in 1850 and 1860:

1850:

John Rawark, 50, Tenn
Margaret Rawark, 44, Tenn
Elizabeth Rawark, 22, Tenn <<<<<
Nancy Rawark, 18, Tenn
Eliza Rawark, 17, Tenn
James Rawark, 14, Tenn
Juliann Rawark, 12, Tenn
William Rawark, 10, Tenn
Margaret Rawark, 8, Tenn
America Rawark, 6, Tenn
John Rawark, 4, Tenn

(District 27, Hamilton, Tennessee; Roll: M432_881; Page: 423; Image: 171.)

1860. The enumerator put John, then all the girls, then all the boys, for some reason; I rearranged them in age order:

John Roark, 60, Tenn
Elizabeth Roark, 30, Tenn <<<<<
Nancy Roark, 28, Tenn
Jame Roark, 24, Tenn
Juda Roark, 21, Tenn
William Roark, 20, Tenn
Margaret Roark, 19, Tenn
America Roark, 16, Tenn
Jack Roark, 12, Tenn

(District 10, Hamilton, Tennessee; Roll: M653_1253; Page: 78; Image: 159.)

In 1860 George is with his first wife in District 10, Hamilton, Tennessee:

Geo Campbell, 31, Tenn, farmer
Isabel Campbell, 23, Tenn
Seamore Campbell, 4, Tenn
Thomas Campbell, 1, Tenn

(District 10, Hamilton, Tennessee; Roll: M653_1253; Page: 77; Image: 158.)

Note that George is just one page away from Elizabeth in 1860. Note also the boy, "Seamore".

in 1870:

George Campbell, 41, farmer
Elizabeth Campbell, 41
Seamon Campbell, 14
Thomas J Campbell, 11
Martha E Campbell, 6
Mary J Smith, 13
(District 10 Subdivision 43, Hamilton, Tennessee; Roll: M593_1532; Page: 597; Image: 290.)

"Campbell is a common surname, but "Seymore" is an uncommon given name. This looks like our George with his sons Seymore and Thomas. He has a new wife, Elizabeth, who was b. abt 1829/1830. Was she a Roark?

The Campbells are on page 597. James, Elizabeth's brother, is in what looks to be the old Roark farm, living with his unmarried sisters, on page 602, just 5 pages away.

In 1880 they have moved to Meigs County:

(Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Race, Age, Birthplace, Occupation Father's Birthplace, Mother's Birthplace)

G. W. Campbell, Self, M, Male, W, 51, Tn, Farmer, Tn, De
Elisabeth Campbell, Wife, M, Female, W, 51, Tn, Keeping House, Tn, Tn
Thos. J. Campbell, Son, S, Male, W, 21, Tn, Farm Laborer, ---, ---
Martha E. Campbell, Dau, S, Female, W, 15, Tn, ---, ---

(District 1, Meigs, Tennessee; p 444A on the LDS.)

George is hiding out under his initials, but, looking at 1870, the ages of everyone match, and names of everyone besides George match down to the middle initials of the kids. Meigs isn't that far from Hamilton. This is the family from 1870, with the same question - is the Elizabeth born 1829/1830 the same one who was daughter of John and Margaret Roark in 1850 and 1860?

There is an IGI record from patron forms, no other source, that says Isabel's maiden name was Bean:

Isabel Bean
Birth: About 1835, Tennessee
Spouse: George Campbell
Marriage: About 1855, Hamilton, Tennessee

I haven't found any other records to confirm her maiden name. Note you could estimate both birth and marriage years in th eIGI citation from the 1860 census entry, although 1836/37 would be my birth estimate, not 1834/36.

There is an IGI Citation for George Campbell marrying Elizabeth Roark on 24 Mar 1868, in Hamilton County, Tennessee; Patron Forms again, Batch Number 7310018, Sheet 43, Source Call No. 0822743.

So - the only "proof" I have that I've traced Elizabeth and George is the line John J. Roark got from Mrs. Laura Roark Shropshire, plus an IGI citation, plus some census entries that seem to match up. Life would be easier if Margaret Gross has been born in Australia to a kangaroo farmer, because then Elizabeth's mother's birthplace in 1880 would have been "Aus", which would have been proof enough for anyone.

What do you all think?
