Hello Alysia, my name is Iraida Roane. My family currently lives in King William County, Va. They have been on Cohoke Road in West Point as far back as about the 1860's.

I too have been doing research on this huge family and have gotten quite a few good leads. So far I know that there were two Roanes' in King William that owned slaves, they were James Roane he owned 23 slaves, and Mary E. Roane who owned 38 slaves. This is listed on the 1860 census slave schedules.

The Roane family goes back to the early settlers in King William. However, be careful as there are from my understanding two different Roane families, one English and the other Irish.

Please feel free to email me at and I will share with you what I have gathered thus far.

Just for the record, there are Roane's of Virginia in West Virginia, who Roane County was named for, (Spencer Roane), Layfette, Louisiana, as well as Tennessee. The family in Louisiana gave me some information along with a pedigree chart.

I look forward to hearing from you. By the way, I am African American but I am open to and welcome White Roanes and any other Roanes of King William County, Virginia I can find, after all had it not been for them we would not exist. I am very proud of my mixed blood, the black side, the white side, and the Native American side.

Talk soon,
Iraida Roane
