Dear Sarah, There seams to be two versions of the ancestors of the William Roane 1713-1759 who ma. Sarah Upshaw 1710-1760. The one that says he was only son of Charles and Frances and grandson of Robert and Frances Bartelot Roane and the one that says he and James came from Grenshaw Ireland in 1741 and settled in Essex County, Va. and that Andrew and John came in Sept. 1739 to Lancaster, Pa.where John was ordained to preach in 1745. Andrew m 1st Mary Bowman 2nd Margaret Walker. (See Genealogy of the Roane Family; also John P. Branch's Historical papers - Randolph Macon College - Vol.1, June 1905, No. 1 ) My family history leans to the latter version.Archibald Gilbert Roane was given land in Ireland for services to his king. Daughter Margaret didn't come. None of William's children named a child Frances or Charles or Robert as was the custom of the times. Gilbert Roane's wife was Jenet and there are plenty of Janets down the line and a Gilbert for a grandson and plenty of Archibalds. Tell me what branch of the tree are you from. I'm from William-Thomas-Thomas-then Isabella Jane who m. Horace Waring in 1820. Elizabeth Waring Wilson
