In All God's Children Fox Butterworth writes:

One of Thomas Roane's sons, John, "came to a very unfortunate end," according to a family history compiled by a friend....The story...passed down by word of mouth... is that John married a black woman, apparently a free black. In turn, they had a child John, born about 1805.
