Your evidence in support of Katherine Roach having been born in 1782 is both strong and credible (it is also compatible with the 1830 census), which pretty much rules out her having been the daughter of John or Thomas Roach. But by bringing Jane Roach into the equation, you have raised a question/issue for which I have no definitive answer, although I have spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out whose daughter Jane Roach was.

Some accounts indicate that Jane Roach was the daughter of Francis Roach. Other accounts indicate that she was the daughter of Francis' son David Roach. All accounts agree that she was born in 1802. One account indicates that she was born in Warren County, KY. There is no evidence that Francis Roach ever lived in Warren County, KY. There was absolutely no mention made of Jane Roach whatsoever in the probate of David Roach's estate, which makes it unlikely that she was his daughter.

For whatever it is worth, the Mormon website indicates that Jane Roach was the daughter of David Roach, and that she was born on 11/21/1802, that she married John Armstrong on 2/24/1825, and that she died on 3/27/1875. There were two David Roaches listed in the 1820 census of Madison County - - one in Goshen Pct. and the other in Six Mile Prairie Pct.; both were between 26 - 45 years old age. I believe that it may be likely that she was the daughter of the other David Roach. After Jane Roach married John Armstrong in 1825, they soon moved to the northern part of Shelby County, IL where they were among the earliest settlers.

I do not find it credible to believe that Jane Roach was the daughter of Francis Roach. Francis would have been 63 years old when Jane was born, which is not unheard of, but her birth would have been 21 years after his last known child was born. More importantly, Jane did not marry until she was 23 years old; if she was Francis’ daughter that would mean that she did not bother to move out of his household until he was 85 years old. That seems like a bit much to me.

None of this addresses the question of who Katherine Roach’s father was. Obviously there was some kind of a connection with Jane Roach Armstrong.

Although Francis Roach lived on a tract of land next to his son Matthew Roach on Cahos Creek beginning in 1806, he never bothered to file a claim on it and thus was never granted title to that land. We do know that prior to 2/5/1813, Francis “inhabited, cultivated, and improved” the SW quarter of Section 36-4N-8W, Madison County. So it is likely that he lived there in 1810 when Katherine was married. If you can figure out where Beverly Watkins’ father lived in 1810, and it turns out to have been close to where Francis lived, that would be pretty good evidence that Katherine was Francis’ daughter. If that is the geographic case, then it would indicate that Katherine was born about a year after Francis’ daughter Caty, which is plausible. It would imply , however, that Francis had a daughter named Caty and another daughter named Katie, but stranger things have happened.
