Your inquiry raises several possibilities. One thing that confuses me is Catherine’s 1782 birth date. Francis Roach had four sons who moved to and lived in St. Clair and/or Madison County, IL. You referenced David, circa 1780 – 1848. His other sons who lived there were Thomas, born circa 1768 and died between 1820 – 1830 in St. Clair County; Matthew, born in 1770 and died in 1852 in St. Clair County; and John, born circa 1776 and died in December 1825 in Monroe County; he lived about ten miles west of Matthew.

Francis and Matthew came to St. Clair County in 1806 and settled along Cahos Creek in what later became Madison County. David is first mentioned in the 1807 ledgers of the Bryan and Morrison store in Cahokia, IL. John Roach is first mentioned in 1810 in the ledgers of the Bryan and Morrison store. This gives some idea when David and John came to that area. In the 1818 census of St. Clair County, Matthew Roach is listed as family #307 (he moved there in 1815), and Thomas Roach is listed as family #321. In the same census of Monroe County, John Roach is listed as family #118, and in the same census of Madison County David Roach is listed as family #427.

Katherine Roach was the first recorded Roach to marry in that part of the world, and as you indicated she married Beverly Watkins on 11/4/810 in St. Clair County. Next to marry was John Roach’s son, David Roach, who married Hannah Atcheson in December 1814 in St. Clair County.

How sure are you that her tombstone indicates her birth to have been on 5/23/1782? Do the 1850 and later censuses substantiate that? That birth date implies she was 28 years old when she married, which seems awfully old for that day and time, unless she was a widow. If she was born later than that, she could easily be the daughter of John Roach or Thomas Roach. When she married, did anyone put up a bond?
