Clagett, Brice"
"The most recent, and comprehensive, case for Sir Thomas Malory of Newbold Revell as the author of the Morte Darthur is made in P.J.C. Field's The Life and Times of Sir Thomas Malory (1993). But the case for Sir (?) Thomas Malory of Papworth has been made much more recently than 1900. See Richard Griffith, "Arthur's Author," in C.W. Post Center of Long Island University, Ventures in Research (1972), and Richard Griffith, "The Authorship Question Revisited," in Toshiyuki Takamiya & Derek Brewer, Aspects of Malory (1981). (Griffith was a professor of English; he did not write "genealogy" and made no claim to be a Malory descendant.) I corresponded with Griffith in 1994-95 and encouraged him to publish a riposte to Field; but he was then in poor health and, to the best of my knowledge, never did so.
The issue largely turns on whether Thomas Malory of Papworth was a knight, since the author clearly was. That in turn compels focus on whether the 1471/2 Northamptonshire ipm of Sir Thomas Malory is that of the Newbold Revell or the Papworth man. Field and Griffith
disagree on that.
The forthcoming History of Parliament, The Commons 1422-1504 will have to grapple with the issue, but nfortunately that isn't projected for publication for several years.
Thomas of Papworth's descent from Amie de Gaveston is solid. Here it is, with a continuation down to settlers in Bermuda and South Carolina:
1. Amie de Gaveston, m. John de Driby.
2. Alice de Driby; m. (3) Sir Anketil Malory.
3. Sir William Malory, c. 1386-1445, of Papworth St. Agnes,
Cambridgeshire, etc.; m. (1), 1420/1, Margaret Corbet, widow.
4. Sir (?) Thomas Malory, 1425-1469, of Papworth St. Agnes, etc.; m. Elizabeth Kinsman.
5. Anthony Malory, 1466-1539, of Papworth St. Agnes, etc.; m. Alice Farington.
6. William Mallory, c. 1520-1596, of Papworth St. Agnes, etc., and London; m., 1548, Joan Chamber.
7. William Mallory, c. 1548-1611, of Papworth St. Agnes and Little Barnsbye House, Bermondsey, Co. Surrey; m. (1), 1578, Elizabeth Gregory.
8. Capt. Horatio Mallory, b. 1595, fl. 1658; settled in Bermuda; m. in Southampton parish, Bermuda, 1629, Dorothy Forster.
9. Elizabeth Mallory, b. 1641, d. by 1717; m. in Southampton parish, Bermuda, 1663, William Rivers (b. 1638, fl. 1717). They settled in South Carolina in 1681 and left descendants there."
Additionally, Sir Owen Perrot married Catharine, daughter of Robert Pointz of Iron Acton whose mother was a daughter of Anthony Woodville.
There were Perots in Bermuda at the same time as Mallorys and Rivers; and a marriage between a Perot and a Mallory.
