Complete scoop on "Earl of Rivers" legend regarding the Rivers family at Chafford:Richard Rivers last official Earl Rivers in the Woodville family officially died same year as his sister Queen Elizabeth Woodville--or Rivers--widow of Ed.IV, which is given as 1491 in some sources but as 1492 in others. Supposedly in order to confiscate the extensive Woodville lands for the "Crown"--i.e.,the new Tudor monarch Henry the Seventh--father of Henry the Eighth--a new Rivers family was "created". Thus there was a Sir Bartholomew Rivers, supposed founder of the Rivers family, 1400-1480 with a record showing he had received an augmentation from Edward IV; his son William Rivers 1420-1506 and a body buried at Rochester Cathedral who was said to have married Alice; their son Richard Rivers 1460-1500 for whom no wife was listed; his son Richard Rivers supposed to be a Steward of the Duke of Buckingham--which is RATHER strange if you know that the Duke of Buckingham illegally beheaded Anthony Woodville the Earl of Rivers of Shakespeare's Richard III--supposedly born 1490 Penshurst, Kent and died 1550 at Chafford Place, Penshurst; and, finally, this Richard's son Sir John Rivers born 1510 Penshurst, Kent died 1583 Hadlow, Kent married Elizabeth Barnes;also a sister Alice Rivers born 1520 described as daughter of Richard 1490-1550 and sister of Sir John Rivers Lord Mayor of London in 1574 married Robert Streatfield and had a son Henry born in 1535. Great effort may have been taken by the first Tudor monarch and the Duke of Buckingham(?) to produce Sir Bartholomew Rivers 1400-1480 as a replacement for the 1st Earl of Rivers who lived at (approximately) that time and a William Rivers 1420-1506 or at least a body to bury as such in Rochester Cathedral in place of the generation of the last Earl of Rivers who died in 1491/1492.It would certainly have been worth the considerable property the king inherited from the Riverses when they "died out" to do so.Richard Rivers 1460-1500 at least would seem to have been real and, if he was the son of either Anthony Rivers or of Anthony's brother and heir the last Earl (incidentally also named Richard) then making him serve as Steward to the Duke of Buckingham would have made a smoothe transition to the family being settled at Chafford.
