As has been stated before by myself and other members of this forum, there probably several lineages called Rivas that may not be related genealogically.
One (or more) of them is a Jewish/Converso-lineage which started around 1400 in Aragon with a person called Simuel Altordox and who changed his name into Rivas when he officially converted to Christianity. Probably many contemporary families Rivas and Ribas both in and outside Spain descend from this person.
Another a separate genealogical lineage seems to be a Basque (Christian) noble lineage called Rivas.
A third lineage seems to be related to Southern France. I have recently seen Rivas on the internet in connection with the Cathars! I'm afraid I've lost the url.
Then there is the Swiss lineage, completely unrelated to these, of the Rivaz family (about which I've posted several messages on this forum).
The connection between these names will probably as follows as others have pointed out already: There used to be a Latin word RIPA which meant riverbank. This evolved into rive (French) and riba or riva (Spanish). In Spanish the noun has become obsolete but still exists as the name of towns or villages (for example Ribas de Sil). Some people have claimed that therefore it is impossible to find out where one's ancestors Rivas or Ribas came from, but I think it is more constructive to find out what (genealogical rather than just heraldic) lineages one can distinguish.
By the way, from an onomastic point of view, all these lineages are related after all!
