       3. Nicolas3 Rivard-dit-Lavigne (Pierre2 Rivard, Thomas1 Rivard-dit-LaTeigne) was born 16 Jun 1617 in St. Aubin de Tourouvre, Mortagne, Perche, Normandie, France, and died 01 Jul 1701 in Batiscan, QC. He married Catherine St.Pair/St.Pere 21 Jun 1653 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC, daughter of Etienne St.Pair/St.Pere and Marie-Madeleine Couteau. She was born 26 Aug 1634 in St. Jean d'Angély, Charente Maritime, France, and died 27 Jun 1709 in Batiscan, QC.

Notes for Nicolas Rivard-dit-Lavigne:
Nicolas was baptized by Father Dangereux on 17 June 1617 in the parish of Saint-Aubin in Tourouvre (near Mortagne), Perche, the son of merchant Pierre Rivard and Jeanne Mullard, who were married 11 November 1613 in Saint-Aubin de Tourouvre. His godparents were Nicolas Boucher and Jeanne Pichon, daughter of Mace. Pierre Rivard, who died after 05 March 1652, is the son of Thomas Rivard (died after 13 September 1620) and Jeanne Chevreau (from La Poterie au Perche, died before 13 September 1620). Jeanne Mullard was baptized by Father Beurrier on 09 July 1597 in Saint-Aubin de Tourouvre, the daughter of manual laborer Robert Mullard and Françoise Lousche, who were married about 1588. Her godparents were Jean Isabeau, Jeanne Doucet (daughter of Nicolas) and Françoise Boivin (daughter of Marin).
Nicolas enlisted to go to Canada on 06 March 1648 in the office of notary Choiseau in Tourouvre. He was to work three years in the service of Noel Juchereau at a salary of 66 livres (the equivalent of $940 in USA currency in the year 2000) per year and was given 15 livres advance salary.
The 1666 and 1667 censuses list the family at Trois Rivières, but they may have already moved to Batiscan, as the lack of baptism dates at Trois- Rivières for the last three children indicates. The 1681 census finds the family at Batiscan.
On 15 April 1689, notary Trottain drew up a donation between Catherine's mother and her son Nicolas, whereby Marie-Madeleine Couteau gave her grandson Nicolas her property on the condition that he take care. of her husband (the boy's grandfather), who could no longer take care of himself due to mental illness. The agreement also stipulated that Catherine and Nicolas would take care of Marie-Madeleine. Nicolas Rivard père was a militia captain at Cap-de-La-Madeleine and Batiscan until 1698, when he was 81 years old. Nicolas Rivard dit Lavigne was buried 01 July 1701 at Batiscan.

Enlistment Contract of Nicolas Rivard

Made in the presence of Guillaume Massard and Jean Chevalier, residing at Tourouvre, witnesses who, with the said Juchereau and us, notary, signed. The said Rivard declared not to know how to sign his name, asked this by us, notary, who advised the parties to have these presents sealed according to the edict and decree of the King.
(Signed) G. Massard, P. Juchereau, Chouaiseau, Chevallier.

His son Antoine was married in Alabama and died in Louisiana.

Notes for Catherine St.Pair/St.Pere:
"Filles à Marier", page 277, Catherine Saint-Père was baptized 26 August 1634 in Saint-Jean- d'Angély (diocese of Saintes), Saintonge, and the fifth of six children of Etienne de Saint-Père and Marie-Madeleine Couteau, who were married about 1626 in Saint-Jean-d'Angely. She lost her father some time before 18 May 1639, when her mother signed a marriage contract with merchant André Musset at La Rochelle. Marie-Madeleine Couteau did not marry Musset, however, and Catherine, sister Jeanne and their mother all left for New France in 1647 as filles a marier (single women) (the other four children died young).
About 1649, Catherine married Mathurin Guillet in Trois Rivières. Mathurin is the son of François Guillet and Perrine Ménard from the diocese of La Rochelle (in either Aunis or Saintonge) and is the brother of Pierre Guillet, who married Catherine's sister Jeanne. He is noted at Trois Rivières on 07 November 1649. Mathurin Guillet and Catherine did not have any children before Mathurin was killed by the Iroquois on 18 August 1652, leaving Catherine a widow at age 18. It was very common in those days for siblings from one family to marry siblings from another family.
About 1653, Catherine married Nicolas Rivard dit Lavigne in Trois Rivières. Though no marriage contract has been found for this couple, it is known that Catherine could not sign her name, but her husband could.
Catherine Saint-Père died 27 June 1709 at Batiscan, where she was buried the next day.

Notes for Joseph Rivard-dit-Lavigne-Laglanderie-Dufresne:
His original ancestors' surname in France was Rivard. His grandfather most likely was given the nickname Lavigne (the vine) when he was in the militia. This was a custom in France at the time. His father was Sieur of La Glanderie. The Sieur title was generally given to landlords out of respect for the person. A descendant could use any one of the three names at any given time, this is why one should keep all the "dit" names for all the decedents. It makes tracing them a great deal easier. In the 1600's and part of the 1700's the government did require that the father's original surname be used in marriage contracts and in the census.
He signed contracts to work out West on 23 July 1726 and on 13 May 1727.
Their daughter Marie Josephe and son Joseph married Houde/Houle siblings in an dual wedding on 13 Nov 1758.
