Mercy Doty was *very* close (if you get my drift) with Laura and Mary. They corresponded in 1912, when Mercy lived in either White Cloud or Belding and was not yet married, and Laura and Mary sent Mercy postcards depicting "Lovers Lane" in Grand Rapids, and encouraging her to join them there.

Laura and Mary, a couple, wanted Mercy to accept them into her household. They communicated in code (i.e. I saw by the eagle that you are at home...)

If she married, would have been after this liaison.
