B. Swanson:
I do not know if we are related. My ancestor, Dr. John Alexander Ritter was born in Jessamine Co., Ky on Jan. 3, 1819, the son of John (A.?) Ritter and Agnes Butler Ritter.Agnes Butler Ritter is described as having come from Virginia (perhaps W. Virginia), and John Ritter, the father is described as being a native of Kentucky. Now the Butler-Ritter took place on Dec. 17, 1814.Given that the bridegroom could have been young at this time, we are still very early in the settlement for that region.
The Ritters in Kentucky by 1800 or earlier appear either in Mason Co., or with the group centered in Woodford & Barren Counties.I have not been able to establish a link with the Barren Co. group, because the dates never seemed to work out.
The deed book for Mason Co. shows quite a few Ritter entries. Only Frederick, John and Richard seem to be connected with property, most of the rest are witnesses.Does that make them local residents?
Apart from the name John, which is everywhere, my John A. Ritter had a sister, Ann, daughters Harriet Ritter and Margaret Elizabeth Belle Ritter. It is quite possible that we are related, but, at present, more data is required.
