John Urban Metcalf (1817-1893), s/o Eleanor Ritchie and Ignatius Metcalf

In The Ritchie Family History Book written by Ina Rose Ritchie Sipes and her sister, Eva Ritchie Thompson in 1973, John Urban Metcalf is listed as the only son of Ignatius Metcalf and Eleanor Ritchie. Eleanor Ritchie and Ignatius Metcalf were married in Nelson Co., KY, bond 15 July 1812.

Eleanor Ritchie Metcalf was one of the youngest children of John Ritchie, Sr., the acknowledged builder of the first whiskey distillery in KY.

Other Metcalf researchers do not acknowledge John Urban Metcalf as this couple's child, saying Ignatius and Eleanor "had no issue." Ignatius Metcalf m/2 Agnes Catherine Hough (or Huff) in Nelson County in 1821 and apparently Ignatius and Agnes had about seven children of their own: Edward, James Stanislaus, John Francis, Willis Ignatius, George, Rose Ann, and Charles Metcalf.

My interest in both Ritchie and Metcalf(e) (also spelled Medcalf in some records) families lies in the fact that my husband, Joe Sipes, descends directly from John Ritchie, Sr. through his great grandmother Sipes who was Amelia Frances Ritchie, d/o Chestine Ritchie; and his mother, Alleen Ray Sipes descends directly from Ignatius Metcalf, Sr. (father of Ignatius Metcalf who m. Eleanor Ritchie) through his son, Joseph Metcalf, on her mother's side of the family.

John Urban Metcalf married Matilta Norris (I believe in Nelson County), but in later years they moved to Hardin County and are buried in the St. James Catholic Church Cemetery. At least two of their sons, John S. and Sylvester died in Nelson County in the early 1930's. John Urban and Matilda had about 13 children, about 11 of whom lived beyond infancy.
1. Sylvester; John S., Henry, Mary Lee, Amanda J. Georgia A., Corah; Ida B., Della May, were those listed in the 1880 Hardin County census. A few of these have their baptisms listed in the St. Clare Church Records in Colesburg. In fact I have seen that another researcher states that James Metcalf was the father of John Urban Metcalf.

I would like to correspond with anyone who knows of this family and would appreciate anyone's input. Does anyone have documentation for the parentage of John Urban Metcalf. I know that some descendants of Sylvester Metcalfe live in the Irvington, Breckinridge Co, KY area, but have not met them yet. I feel like the Ritchie Sisters who compiled the Ritchie family history were very credible researchers, visited many old people in their studies, gathering information about the descendants of John Ritchie, Sr. of Nelson County. Both these ladies would be over 100 years of age if they were still living today.

Thank you,

Ann Sipes
