Rippy's come to AMERICA
In the beginning... there were two Rippy brothers who have never been proven to be brothers but I am convinced they were. One was Edward b. 1729-1734 and the other was Mathew b. 1730-1740 . Their father never made it to America and disowned at least one of them (Edward) for coming in the first place. Both lived in Orange Co. NC. Both had grandchildren who made it to Bedford Co. TN.Edward's children migrated first into the Rutherford/Lincoln (now Cleveland) Co. NC area before coming to Bedford. Mathew's children went straight into TN from NC.
Edward's father was very much opposed to his son's coming to America telling him that if he did come here among barbarians and heathens that he should never inherit a dollar of his estate. However, Edward being of a roaming nature and no doubt had confidence in himself to feel he could make it through life without his father's assistance so he ran away and took passage on a ship that was coming to America. He sailed from Liverpool, England. He was six months on the water and at one time while on his voyage the ship on which he sailed got lost and the whole crew came near perishing. He landed in Baltimore, Maryland around 1750. (this record has not been found) Edward never wrote a line to his parents in Ireland. Nor ever received a word of news from them to the day of his death. He said that his father's family was the only family with the name Rippy that he had ever heard of in Ireland. Edward first settled in Orange Co. NC. on the Haw River. In 1790, Edward and his family moved to Rutherford Co. in that part which is now Cleveland. They lived, died, and were buried there.
