Now on the American Biographical History of Eminent and Self-Made Men of the State of Indiana page 54, Representative Men of Indiana it shows a Matthew RIPPEY of Jackson Twp Elkhart Co IN b. 20 Feb 1803 in Warren Co near Lebanon OH. His parents were Joseph and Elizabeth DAVIS RIPPEY of Scotch and Irish descent. They came to America before the Revolutionary War for religious freedom. He emigrated from VA to OH about 1799 and lived as a farmer until 1808 when he moved to Brookville Franklin Co, IN and was in the milling business for 3 years, there. Then he moved to Salisbury, Wayne Co, IN and became a blacksmith until 1816 when he took up farming, once again. He was a member of the Christian Church and died in 1830 at 55 yrs of age.
Joseph's son Matthewtaught school for 4 terms. In 1826 he bought 160 acres of land in Rush Co, IN and worked evenings as a shoemaker (my GGDad and GDad were both shoemakers). After five years, he sold his farm and moved to Elkhart Co where he has lived for nearly 50 yrs. He was reared a Democrat and in 1932 was elected trustee for Jackson Township where he served for 12 yrs. He was elected Justice of the Peace at the same time and was 7 yrs in that office. Before his 2nd term expired, he resigned the office and accepted the nomination for Representative of the State Legislature in 1839. He was re-elected in 1840 and in 1844 he was chosen by his party to fill a one year vacancy in the Indiana State Senate. In 1848 he was representative of his district for one year in the Lower House of the Legislature. In 1863-64 he again remained as a representative. He was a man of integrity and very well liked by friends and acquaintances. He was an honored member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for 40 yrs and married Aug 3, 1826 Jane P MONTGOMERY of Wayne Co, IN. They had 3 sons and 2 daughters. Robert M RIPPEY was born Aug 17, 1828 entered the late war as a captain of Company I, 10th Iowa Infantryand procured the trophy of General Beauregard's flagstaff which he made into a cane and gave to his father. He witnessed the growth of Elkhart Co, Goshen IN from a few cabins to a city with 4500 inhabitants.
About the La Rapier thing: yes, it is true and my book is working on tying all that in I have the copy of this information from a cousin in AZ who found it with his Gfather's things, after the gentleman passed away and he was generous to send me a copy. I also have a copy of it from another cousin who wrote a Genealogy from 1066 La Seur La Ripiere from France who was in the Battle of Normandy France and went to England and his descendant, Sir Henry RIPPEE, anglicized name, of course, is on the Abby Scrolls for the battles in England and later an ancestor went to Ireland with William the Conqueror and loved the land and settled there where he fell in live with a Welsh lassie and married and became wealthy with linen factories and his son, either Matthew or Edward wanted free of the business and left for America. I have much on this and will put it in the book. I am at the point of trying to gather all the Rippy family informaiton from any one that I can and also of collecting factual data to support the book! It is a hard and time consuming and not inexpensive task, but I hope to get the book written and published this year! I have fell into some of the above information due to the diligent search of my little cousin in IA and she has talked with the brothers in Ireland and contacted the cousin, in TX who had this Ulster Ireland Report done back around 1975! He did an excellent job and this information that you have on the McAddams-RIPPEY family is the first that I have given to anyone. I am waiting for the cousin's approval to use this information to further our knowledge of our ancestors! We are definitely cousins, James. Now, how many back is another story to write because I have to get these IRE/ENG/SCOT/VA/NC/MO/MS/OH/AZ/CA/KY/IL/IA etc cousins all put together. If I could stop everything around me and just do this, well it would have been done a long while ago. I have been doing research since my Dad died in 1975 of a heart attack at 48 for our Rippy Family because those that I knew and loved were such wonderful people and I want my children and gchildren to know where they came from because these are generations, my Gparents and Gaunts and Guncles that should not be forgotten! My Dad's siblings are all gone as the last one died in 1995 and is buried in Fairfield TN, Sugar Grove where my Wagon Train Jesse settled sometime in the 1800s and being born in Trousdale Co, TN and having cousins galore on my Mom's ROALIN side, I visit every chance I get and have walked those Rippy cemeteries and hills and even driven and stepped out on Rippy Ridge Road in Shelby Co, TN! I havea cousin 84 who has sent me pictures of my GGparents William Morgan and Mary E RIPPY and she also sent me the story of how they went by Conastoga Wagon Train to Odin, Marion Co IL and her parents Alice Belle RIPPY and AbrahamHeney GREGORY to IA by wagon train! She has generously shared photos of GUncle RIP and GUncle Jimmy and Eliza DAVIS RIPPY who emigrated with GGDad to IL and I have lots of obits from there, thanks to a cousin, Becky RIPPY JETT who lives in Sandoval and graciously introduced me and sister in law, Nancy RIPPY to cousin Nancy RIPPY FRIMEL who is the local historian for Odin, IL and she took us to see where all the brothers were buried! The Peaceful Valley Cemetary in Odin, Marion Co IL holds many Rippys: William Morgan and brother, Jerry M (Jeremiah McMillin) and wife Elizabeth Betty MAGGART RIPPY, brother George Tarrence and wife Tennessee Charity MAGGART RIPPY and some of their children that remained there: George Harrison and Cleveland and Walter McGoffin and Ora Belle BLACK RIPPY and Nettie Powell and Thomas BLACK and their family and Andy BLACK and George BLACK and lots and lots of my family history! for Jesse first married Mary Elizabeth Polly MOODY Sept 8, 1798 in Orange NC and then when she died, much later, I think he married Mary Ann BLACK in Tennessee, Sumner Co about 1829 or so and they had no children, but her daughters by deceased husband John Michael BLACK, Eliza and Malinda married Jesse's sons by ME MOODY RIPPY, Elvis Jefferson married Linda and Jesse Anderson married Eliza and they went to IL and went back to TN. Anderson and Eliza are buried on the land where Jesse and brothers James and Edward owned there close by Fairfield Cemetary in Sugar Grove, TN Sumner Co and Elvis Jefferson RIPPY was married twice and moved to Allen Co KY after going to IL. He married Malinda BLACK in Marion Co IL, Odin and his son Elvis Jr married Jennie HARRIS and they stayed in IL and are buried there! I have pictures of the homes in Sumner Co of Jesse and Jesse Anderson and George and of Druery and Francis PERRY also, in Allen Co, KY and
of Turner's Station in TN.
Well, that is lots of information, I was not notified of your post, so e-mail me at my own address, please, thanks, Patti Ann RIPPY HAIR in Indpls, IN
