In other enumerations, I’ve seen people counted twice, but this is exceptional. Because I found the Chas. FOX family in Saratoga Springs, Saratoga Co., NY, I didn’t look for them further. On 12 Sep 1850, Charles’ mother-in-law Susan RIPLEY (57, b. NY) was the head of her Saratoga household which included the following FOXes: Charles B. (40, physician, b. England), Elizabeth (37, b. NY), Susan (14, b. NY), Frederic P. (12, b. NY), John (7, b. NY), and Charles (6, b. NY). Less than a month later on 9 Oct 1850, Charles Sr. had moved his family to Oswego, IL -- the enumeration there is a close match.
I don’t believe Fanny (11, b. NY) in the Oct enumeration is a new child. She doesn’t appear to have been enumerated elsewhere, so I think she is a misenumeration of Frederic P[erry]. Perry was with his grandmother RIPLEY in Amboy, IL, but that wasn’t till 1860.
Regarding Thuresey RIPLEY who, with sons Thomas and Seman, was enumerated two households before the FOXes in 1850 Oswego: she appears as Theresa RIPLEY in 1860 Amboy, IL. Her sons were still with her, albeit with different names. (The William in her 1850 household doesn’t appear to have been her son as he is listed after Charles DANFORTH. The enumerator didn't use ditto marks to confirm surnames, so enumeration sequence is our only guide.)
Now that you know Susan [Mc]COMBER RIPLEY was in Saratoga Springs in 1850, it is very plausible that 25-year-old painter Josiah RIPLEY, who was enumerated 46 pages before Susan, was her son. I can find no other Josiah RIPLEY in the U.S. who was born 1800-1840 NY.
