Hi Carolyn,I am not sure what kind of notes you are looking for.I have never found any notes on the Riouxs before the Pioneers. Here are the notes that I have on the pioneers. I hope that this helps. Janet
Jean Rioux/Riou/Roich'iou:
His name is recorded as "Rochiou". His son Jean changed it to "Riou" and some of his grandchildren changed it to "Rioux".To make the connection easier I choose to go "Rioux(Riou) because I have three loupes in this family.
Jean Rioux, 1st Seigneur of Trois Pistoles:
The surname Rioux (or Riou, as the first generation were known in New France) originated from Brittany, in France.Originally, the surname was spelled Keroch'iou or Roich'iou.
In the 1681 census he was at Île d'Orléans. On 15 Mar 1696, Jean Riouexchanged his land at Île d'Orléans for the Seigneurie of Trois Pistoles from Charles Denis of Vitre.Jean was the founder and the first "Seigneurie" (landlord) of Trois Pistoles in QC.His son Nocolas was the second seigniory of Trois Pistoles. His descendants were known as "Seigneurs" (Landlords) of Trois Pistoles.
Nicolas Rioux, 2nd Seigneur of Trois Pistoles:
In 1712 he purchased the seigneur of Trois Pistoles from Pierre Niort.Nicolas became the second seigneur of Trois Pistoles.
Between Jan 6 and Jan 9 1756, Nicolas his son Nicolas and 5 month old Grandson Nicolas-Francois died of Smallpox during the terrible epidemic of 1755-56.The Rioux family were greatly affected by this decease. In 1956, Nicolas's brothers Vincent and Pierre also died.No records of their death was found. We found out about them in the reading of their wives will that same year.Sieur of Rimouski, Germain Lepage husband of Genevieve Rioux was buried 7 Feb 1756 in Rimouski.Joseph Gerbert, father of Catherine that married Nicolas Rioux died 23 Feb 1756 at Cap St. Ignace. The 2nd Seigneur of L'Isle Verte Jean Baptiste Cote (bother in law to Germain Lepage) died on 3 Jan 1756.
Nicolas' son's death records do no indicate that his father died before him. What surprises me is that the elder Nicolas died on the 6th and was not buried till the 9th.Even if he died very late on the 6th after his son’s funeral, he should have been buried on the 7th if he died of Smallpox. It almost indicates to me ( I have no literature on this , it is just a theory), that the elder Nicolas may have died of shock at the loss of his son’s death. He was 72 and given the times that was old for a man.It is just a theory. Victims of Smallpox were generally buried the same day as were his son and grandson.
For the decedents of our pioneering ancestor Jean Rioux, 1st Seigneur of Trois Pistoles, this was a terrible year as it was for many other families during any epidemic.
The above information was taken from the History of Trois Pistoles 1697-1997, by the SHG of Trois Pistoles page 113.
Vincent Rioux, Co Seigneur:
He inherited a part of Trois Pistoles from his father. No record of his death was found and it is assumed that he died along with several other members of the Rioux family during the smallpox epidemic in early 1756.On 5 Nov 1756, his widow's inventory was read.Several of his descendants dropped the "x" in Rioux.
