I am the son of Max Rios Rios, born June 10, 1898 in Ciales, Puerto Rico, deceased Dec. 16, 1958 in San German, Puerto Rico., He was the eldest of six children of Juan Rios Serpa and Juana Maria Rios Rivera (they were first cousins). He studied in Ponce, worked in San Juan as assistant to Greek-American Sosthenes Ben, president of Porto Rico Telephone Company (and later founding chairman of ITT).
In 1919, after serving briefly in the U.S. Army, Max Rios Rios emigrated to New York to continue his studies at Columbia University, graduating with the Class of 1924. He pursued a teaching career, lecturing at Columbua, later at Brooklyn College. He married Marie Reichard (3rd generation Puerto Rican) in 1928. I was their only child, born Oct. 20, 1929.
In 1933-34, out of work due to the Depression, he took the family to Paris for one year, earning a degree in French at La Sorbonne. Returning to New York, he supported the family dring the Depression with a variety of jobs until the outbreak of World War II, when Max Rios Rios embarked on a successful new career as Spanish copywriter and translator with two international advertising agencies. He earned his PhD in 1944 at New York University, his dissertation on the 19th Century novels of Spanish writer Armando Palacio Valdes.
After 30 years in New York, he returned to Puerto Rico in 1949 to accept the teaching position of Chairman of Romance Languages at San German's Instituto Politecnico, later renamed Universidad Interamericana. He was an active Rotarian, much in demand as a public speaker on behalf of the university throughout Puerto Rico. He died suddenly there in December 1958 from a coronary thrombosis while proctering an exam. He is interred in San German.
I am interested in contacting other members of the Rios family from Ciales, Puerto Rico who might assist in building a Rios Family Tree.
