We have the same story in my family. My grandpa (William Monroe Ringo) used to say the James' were cousins of ours. I do know that John Peters Ringo's aunt was married to Col. Coleman Younger, the Uncle of the outlaw Younger brothers (Cole Younger was named after him, in fact). The Youngers and the James' were cousins. The Younger Ranch was in California, and Johnny, his mother, and his sisters stayed there for a time after his father's death. Whether that was what grandpa was talking about, I don't know.
