Isaac Ellis Ring (son of Jere Foster Ring & Phebe Ellis)
Posted by: Jason Ring (ID *****5822) Date: November 09, 2007 at 10:42:32
  of 1348

I'm a direct descendent of Isaac Ellis Ring (3rd great grandfather). I'm in the process of tracing my ancestry back to the Mayflower through Isaac's mother Phebe Ellis Ring. I've collected birth and marriage records for other family members but Isaac Ellis Ring has proven to be a problem. I own a copy of the Ring family genealogy published by Harry P. Ring back in 1931. It states that Isaac left Maine in the 1840s due to his tuberculosis and settled in Little River, North Carolina and further states that all of his children were born there and he died there after 1900. I have found this to be incorrect. The 1850 and 1860 censuses show him living in Horry County, South Carolina. The 1870 and 1880 censuses show him living in nearby Brunswick County, North Carolina. I have researched and found that there are 3 Little River townships in North Carolina (Transylvania, Caldwell, and Alexander counties) none of which are near where the censuses place him. I've since found out that there is a Little River, South Carolina located in Horry County which neighbors Columus County, North Carolina. On top of that, my father has told me that his grandfather told him that the family owned a 490 acre farm in Whiteville, North Carolina (Columbus County) and lived there until they moved to Irwin County, Georgia at the turn of the century. So at this point, I don't have a clue where he lived or died because of the conflicting accounts. The odd thing is that everything I've found on Isaac Ellis Ring, which isn't a lot, states that he died after 1900; HOWEVER, his wife Susan Mahala shows up on the 1900 census in Irwin County which has me thinking maybe he died earlier than 1900 or otherwise, she packed up and moved really fast after the funeral. Does anyone have any information about Isaac Ellis Ring, his date of death, his final resting place?? I have been in contact with Kay Jackson, County Clerk of Weld, Maine, the supposed birth place of Isaac; however, she has been unable to locate a birth record for him given the date October 20, 1829. Kay did find a birth record for Phebe Ellis and her parents record of marriage in the town journals. I have asked her to look again for his birth record which she has agreed to do. In the meantime, I have scoured online cemetery indexes in North and South Carolina and have been unable to locate Isaac Ellis Ring's grave. A specific date of death would be invaluable. I would appreciate any information you can pass along to me or any research tips. Also, does anyone know anything about Albert Sidney Merrill's genealogy book on the Ring family? Thanks!
