Hi Lucy,Thanks for your response and I'm glad you liked the article by Wilson Ring.It does bring the past to life, doesn't it?I can shed light on a couple of things you mention.
First, the rumor about Seth Ring's paternity seems to be just that -- family stories, without any basis in fact. There is NO evidence that Mary Brackett Ring was ever taken captive as an adult. She was taken captive as a girl (aged about 12) along with all her family, but they escaped within a day. This would not have resulted in the rumored pregnancy and was much too early anyway (1676) to have been the conception of Seth.If anyone out there has contrary information, please please share it.
As for the related rumor, that her son Seth had an Indian father, we also now know that was not true. This has been shown through Y chromosome DNA analysis of a direct line male descendant of Seth -- there is no Native American DNA.
About the "hero of Breakfast Hill" story, I believe one of the leaders (heroes) of that skirmish with the Indians was Captain John Libby, Seth's father-in-law.I've never seen any reference to Seth's participation and in fact I doubt if he was even born then -- certainly he was not an adult.I'd like to know the source of your information here.Maybe there was another encounter on Breakfast Hill later that I have missed. Can you send me your sources?
Let's stay in touch. You may email me directly if you wish.
