Katie,

Thanks for replying. The Schlemmers really know their history! I have heard from several people with Schlemmer backgrounds, and they have all been looking for Pierre Schlemmer. It is VERY LIKELY that this Peter Schlemmer who married Catherine Rinehart/Rhinehart/Reinhardt is the Pierre Schlemmer you are looking for. Peter and Catherine are listed as "Slimer" in the 1850 St. Joseph Co., IN census. Note that Peter would have been born ca 1815, the same year as your Pierre Schlemmer.

The youngest child listed in 1850 is probably a "George W." who later went by the name William because his younger half-brother was named "George." The blended family shows up in the 1860 & 1870 census under "Mitchel". In one of the census years the "Schlemmers" are spelled "Slemer" and TRANSCRIBED as "Tlemer" ! so those children would easily be lost if you didn't know who you are looking for.

Peter and Catherine had three sons:
John Schlemmer
Jacob Schlemmer
(George?) William Schlemmer

Catherine Rhinehart Schlemmer married Jacob Mitchel (b. ca. 1804) sometime before 1853. They had three children:
Christena Mitchel SCHLEMMER b. 1 june 1853 d. 25 Apr 1830
George Mitchel b. 15 Feb 1855 d. 25 Apr 1941
Sophia Mitchel

Jacob Mitchel was likely a widower when he married Catherine Rhinehart Schlemmer as there is am 11-year-old Benjamin Mitchel listed with the blended family in the 1860 St. Joseph Co., IN census. We don't know who his first wife may have been or when & where they got married. I also don't have any info. about when or where Peter Schlemmer & Catherine Rhinehart got married or exactly when Peter Schlemmer died.

You may already be aware the the Bremen Public Library's website, which has a searchable obit. index with digital images of the actual obits. There are several Schlemmers listed and other obits from the area. Your Hobart Schlemmer is listed, for example.

The Marshall Co., IN Historical Society (Marshall Co. is south of St. JOe Co.) has some Schlemmer info.

The St. Pauls Lutheran church has several Schlemmer baptisms

I am interested in the Rhinehart/Mitchel line myself (George Mitchel was my gg grandfather) but I seem to have the most information about the Schlemmers & am willing to share what I have. I have some digital images of records that I could e-mail you. I don't know how interested you are in cousins & siblings, etc. on the Schlemmer side. I have been in contact with some Schlemmer descendants who have shared their info. with me. They are interested in the Jackemeyers & Hummels & Schlemmers and other related names.

Thanks so much for sharing!

Sarah
