IMMIGRANT JACOB REINHARDT -- REINHARDTS IN AMERICA Because the writer is 77 years of age, in the “twilight of his life”, and still working at operating the business he started 40 years ago, with very limited time for research, he wishes to preserve his data for posterity. In addition to his personal research, he has disbursed over $1,000.00 to professionals. In contemplation of completing the research and publishing a book on Immigrant Jacob Reinhardt, he writes this overview for the benefit of all Reinhardt researchers, so that all documented research might be contributed towards this objective. According to family lore, Immigrant Jacob Reinhardt arrived in America in 1734, 36 or 37, settled in what later became West Manhein Twp, York Co., PA, became a Farmer, and lived to be 100 years of age. He is NOT on the Strassberger Passenger lists, and Immigrant Jacob remains hidden in the archives We conjecture that perhaps Immigrant Jacob arrived as a widower with the family of Immigrant Conrad arr 1737, perhaps a Son. Someone claimed to have seen Jacobs mark X on a document, but we have not found it. From his decendents, we have PROVED Jacob b 1760 forward. However a dispute remains as to the Father of Jacob b1760.. Most early researchers have it as Immigrant Conrad, arr 1737 on the Townsend. But one Mormon submitter claimed it was a Conrad b 1735, with NO documentation as to the date or place of birth. The name was changed to Rinehart when Conrad b1785 migrated to Ohio. Meanwhile, Reinhardts in North Carolina claim an Immigrant Ancestor named Daniel who arrived in York Co. PA in 1739, operated a Tannery there, and later migrated on to Lincoln Co. NC. Also, another ancestor, a Jacob arrived in NC. For generations, family lore has held that the family was heir to a “vast estate” in Germany When we learned that the Carolina Reinhardts, who had first come to PA, also referred to the “vast estate” legacy, we established a probable link to our family. We conjecture that Immigrants Conrad, Daniel and Jacob all might have been Sons of Immigrant Jacob. If this is so, the Reinhardt family would very well be among the earliest Americans, with a most impressive history. All this, however, must yet be Proved. An early legacy of the Carolina Reinhardt family was the founding of Reinhardt College in Waleska, Georgia, in 1883, by Captain A M. Reinhardt, an Attorney. Reinhardt College, affiliated with the Methodist Church, was listed in U.S. News and World Reports as one of America’s best colleges. Considering the Immigration of one of America's oldest families, and a claim abt 1895, that we were heirs to a vast German Estate, is reason enough this heritage must be documented. In 1918, a Lawyer family member planned to go to Germany to file a claim, but abandoned the mission, because "the old Family Bible" was lost. A book "Germans in America" lends credence to this claim worthy of research. The citation is: Mergen, Josef, "Amtliches Dokument uber die Millionerbdchaft Reinhart” (Official document regarding the multimillion dollar Reinhardt estate) Trierischer Volksfreund (14 February 1954). (This is a Newspaper published in Trier, Ger). Unfortunately, the article is NOT in the 2/14/54 issue. But we did find an article in the 5/25/56 issue re a German General Reinhardt Estate of abt $300 million. That article implies a connection to the “vast estate” referred to. We must search to find the article by Mergen. (We also would hope to get a copy of the Document referred to) The University of Saarland has on file a Two (2) Volume set of Mergens work, but I have not found anyone to search it. Research reveals that “people who left Germany without permission forfeited all rights to inheritance”. It appears that the estate was bequeathed to a General Reinhard b1720, being the “only surviving heir”. The article of 5/26/56 states that one of his sons migrated to India, where the “estate was lost”. All my data has been installed on the Website “The Rinehart Reunion”, and is available to all Rineharts and Reinhardts. I hope that our combined research can “prove” our case that we are all cousins, and that should I not live long enough to publish a book on Immigrant Jacob Reinhardt, someone else will be able to. That will be my legacy to posterity. Notify Administrator about this message?
