I found out from the WWI draft registration card that John/Giovanni went by both names but used Giovanni Rine for his cursive signature. His wife was Rosa, but on 1930 Census listed as Rose and the Family name spelled "Rini". I know the daughter Mary was never "married" and went by Rini her whole life. My Grandfather is the son Nicholas and he definitely went by "Rine" his adult life. Draft card says Giovanni "John" was from Palermo, Italy. Census says they both immigrated in 1899 and both were still aliens. Draft card says he was a fruit pedlar in the Eastern Market--self employed. He was of medium height, stout, hazel eyes and black hair. In WWI they lived at 875 Lafayette Ave. E. and in 1930 at 3754 Lafayette Ave in the 13th Ward, block 648 (enumeration district 82-375 Sheet 5B) both in Detroit. Their children on the 1930 Census were Lena Gusmano age 22 with her husband Phillip Gusmano Sr. age 25 (also a fruit/vegetable salesman on census) and under age 1 baby son Phillip Gusmano Jr; Anna, age 20; John Jr., age 18; Nicholas (Nicholas James Rine is full name), age 15; Joseph, age 9; and Mary, age 5. Lena Rini/Rine Gusmano would have at least 3 children Phillip, "Jimmy" and Rosemary who lived to adulthood. Nicholas James Rine had 9 children with Mary Helen McNeely Rine. They lived in Detroit until the early 1970's and then moved to Livonia. He died 5 June 1996 and Mary Helen died in late July 1998. Both died in Detroit metro area, having been married a little over 50 years. If anyone knows about the origins or further details of this family, please reply:).
