Information previously posted in this forum, at http://genforum.genealogy.com/rimmer/messages/267.htmlhttp://genforum.genealogy.com/rimmer/messages/267.html, affirms that Chesley's wife was Elizabeth Wade, daughter of Josiah Wade and his first wife, Polly Denny.
It appears that those who are interested in this line generally believe that
--not only was Elizabeth Wade Chesley's first wife, which I do not question,
--but that Chesley Rimmer was Elizabeth's first husband, which I am questioning here today.
It is my opinion that Chesley Rimmer was Elizabeth's second husband, and I would welcome any documented information that confirms OR negates my opinion.
There is a method to my madness and I have reasons for my bold opinion.
(a) Notice the lengthy gap between the births of Frances E. and John W.
(b) No one, to the best of my knowledge, has a documented and confirmed marriage date/year for Chesley and Elizabeth.
(c) In April of 1863, Aurelius Hubbard Trim died of pneumonia contracted during service as a private in Co. D, 6th Tennessee Cavalry, leaving a wife, Mary Ann (nee Anderson), and three children:Elizabeth, and twins John H. and James A. Trim. The children's guardian, Uncle Abraham B. Lipford, applied for benefits on behalf of the children in the name of their father based on their father's military service. In Lipford's application on behalf of the children, he affirms that Hubbard Trim and his wife were married 30 May 1858, in McNairy Co. TN.
(d) Among the papers in the Trim pension/benefits file is an affidavit from Thomas and Chesley Rimmer, dated 7 April 1871.The affidavit reads as follows:
State of Tennessee
County of McNairy
Thomas Rimmer and Chesley Rimmer, residents of Purdy P.O. in said County whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who, by me first sworn, according to law, do depose and say, that they were well acquainted with Relius. H. Trim now deceased, late a Private in Co. D of the 6th Regt. Tennessee Cav. Volunteers, and with Mary A. Trim, his wife.
These affiants further depose and say that the said Relius H. Trim died while in the service, leaving him surviving only the following named children under sixteen years of age of hiself with his wife, the said Mary A. Trim viz:Elizabeth, John and James Trim, and that said children are the children and only children now living of said Mary A. Trim with her late husband, said Relius H. Trim and that she has remarried since the death of her said husband and that they are the only legitimate children now living of said Mary A. Trim by said Soldier, her lat husband, and that said Soldier left no children by a former marriage, and they further say that their knowledge of the above facts is obtained from the following source, viz:Personal acquaintance with the soldier in his time for more than 16 years and his wife the said Mary A. Trim and her children named above and that they have no interest nor concerned in the prosecution of a claim for a Widow's Pension in the case of said Soldier.

Witnesses:G.M. Moore and W.H. Richards
Sworn to and subscribed before me this 7th day of April A.D. 1871, and I hereby certify that I have no interest nor concerned in the prosecution of this claim, and that I read the foregoing to the deponents, and that they subscribed and swore to the same with a full knowledge of its contents.

My reasoning:
(a) Chesley and Thomas Rimmer affirmed that they knew Relius (Aurelius) H. Trim for more than 16 years.Aurelius' middle name varies among sources:Hubbard, Hubbart, Harbert.Because Trim died in 1863, in order for Chesley and Thomas to have known him for more than 16 years, they had to have met him no later than 1847 ... in Person Co. NC.
(b) Trim appears as "Arrelus H. Trim, 24 years old, born in NC" in the 1860 McNairy Co. TN census (Purdy P.O.), which suggests that he was about 14 years old in some 1850 Person Co. NC census.
(c) Trim enlisted in the 6th Tennessee Cavalry and is recorded on related military records as "Relius H. Trim." I am the person responsible for combining "Arrelus" and "Relius" and turning that combination into the Roman name:Aurelius.
(d) It takes little imagination, if any, given the variations in Trim's name, to recognize that "Hubbard R. Trim" is a viable variant name for the person I call "Aurelius Hubbard Trim."
(d) When I see the 1850 census entry for Chesley and Elizabeth Rimmer and read the name "Hubbard R. Rimmer, age 14," I see "Hubbard Relius Trim."
(e) If I assume
--that Chesley Rimmer was Elizabeth Wade's second husband,
--that Mary J., Hubbard R., and Frances E., in Chesley and Elizabeth's 1850 household, were Trim(m)s by Elizabeth's first marrage,
--that Elizabeth married Chesley after the death of or divorce from her first husband,
I understand why Chesley Rimmer was asked to provide an affidavit in Lipford's application for benefits for Aurelius Hubbard Trim's children and I also understand why there are five years between the births of Frances E. and John W.
Again, I would welcome any documented information that confirms OR negates my opinion.
