William Riley - famous Southerner?

While researching, I have noticed that there seemed to be a lot of men named William Riley or William R.<surname> that were born in the early 1800s, especially in the South. For example, I have two in my tree born 1823 and 1830 in NC.

The lack of any Riley's in my tree, plus the number of times I have run across it in other families, makes me think there was a famous military or political figure named William Riley around that time.

Can anyone enlighten me?
