Taken from " The Colonial Riley Families of the Tidewater Frontier" Vol. I by Robert S. Riley: pp 367
"At this point, the writer should mention he is aware that a Patrick Riley, Sr., and family were living in Clay County, Kentucky, in the early 1800s. In fact, the names of Patrick, Sr., along with his sons Patrick, Jr., and William are listed in the 1810 and 1820 Federal Censuses of Clay County. While crossing the Atlantic Ocean be ship enroute to the Virginia Colony in the 1760's Patrick's wife, Ann, fell overboard. Fortunately, she was rescued at sea and brought again on board to finish her journey. After their arrival in Virginia, Patrick heard about the Land Bounty Act passed in 1761 by the South Carolina Assembly, and they made their way from Virginia to South Carolina to apply for free land. He walked the distance while she rode on a donkey. In South Carolina, they lived at Riley Springs in Tumblin Shoals in that part of the Old 96th District which later became Laurens County. In the early 1800s, they migrated to Kentucky and settled in Clay County. Patrick Riley, Sr., and wife Ann had the issue as shown below.
