John Rigney, Mary Cromwell
Posted by: Gary E Young (ID *****1277) Date: June 08, 2002 at 14:29:01

Several decades ago Dr. George Henton wrote that Mary Rigney Henton, William Rigney (m. Amariah Potter), and Charles Rigney (which one?) were children of John and Mary Cromwell Rigney. Does anyone know where he obtained this information? Has anyone seen any old record or tradition that supports these parents or siblings? Henton then seemed to try to link the above to Pittsylvania County, but he was perhaps only trying to reconcile published material he found in books on Virginia genealogy with some material that he may have obtained from family members with whom he corresponded. Henton also added that these children had an Uncle Benjamin Fawcett about whom he said nothing further. In Frederick Co., Va. was a Benjamin Fawcet whose descendants say had a wife named Delilah Rigney. Both William Rigney (wife Amariah) and Mary Rigney Henton named daughters Delilah, so this tend to substantiate Henton's assertion. Also, Benjamin Fawcett signed as witness (or bondman?) when Mary Rigney married George Henton. A guardian signed, too, suggesting that Mary may have been an orphan by that date. The guardian's name is difficult to read on the original bond.
